John Lewis, Stratford
John Lewis opened a brand new department store in the new Westfield Stratford City, Europe’s largest shopping centre and gateway to London’s Olympic Park.
Workplace Art was appointed to develop a brief for an installation within the distinctive glazed ‘prow’ that makes a bold statement connecting the space internally and externally, taking into account the architectural space, the frit design on the glazing, be appropriate to the John Lewis brand and contribute to an inviting and unique shopping experience.
Jamie & Juliet Gutch were commissioned to create a 12 metre powder coated aluminium and stainless steel mobile that fills the space with larks in flight. An Exaltation of Larks is a series of connected pieces. The movement of one triggers movement in the others so that the elements of each mobile move harmoniously around each other.
